Buying Better, Not More — A Mindset Shift for Property Investors
There's a quiet kind of pressure
in property investing to always be doing the next deal. Social feeds are full
of purchase announcements, portfolio counts, and headlines about people who own
“12 properties by 30.” It's easy to start measuring progress by volume.
But volume isn't the same as
wealth.
A portfolio of properties bought
quickly, without a clear reason for each one, can just as easily become a
liability as an asset — properties that don't perform, that were bought on hype
rather than fundamentals, or that don't actually serve the goal they were meant
to.
The better question isn't
“how many properties should I own?” It's “does this property make sense?”
Does it fit the strategy? Does
the land size, the location, and the numbers stack up against comparable sales?
Is there a clear reason it was chosen — beyond “it was available” or “the
market's hot right now”?
A sustainable approach to
building a portfolio often looks less exciting than it sounds. It might mean
one purchase every couple of years rather than four in twelve months. It might
mean walking away from a property that looks fine but doesn't fit, even when
everyone else at the auction wants it.
That pace isn't a limitation —
it's often what separates a portfolio that compounds steadily over a decade
from one that stalls out because two of the five properties never should have
been bought in the first place.
Buying better, with purpose, and
with a clear understanding of why a property makes sense will always outperform
buying more.
